About
What is Barnyard Millet?
Barnyard millet is the iron powerhouse of the millet family, carrying 15.2–18.6mg of iron per 100g — more than most plant foods. It grows on the terraced hill farms of Garhwal and Kumaon at altitudes up to 2,500m, requiring no irrigation. The Pahari women who primarily cultivate it call it Jhangora — and it has been harvested, threshed, and stored in earthen pots here for centuries. It is one of only two millets in India to have received a GI tag (December 2023, Uttarakhand). During Hindu fasting festivals including Navratri and Ekadashi, Jhangora is a preferred staple because it is traditionally classified as a non-grain.
Key Compound
Phytic acid (and reduction thereof)
High phytic acid binds iron — but soaking barnyard millet for 8+ hours activates phytase and reduces phytic acid by 50%, dramatically improving iron bioavailability.

Health Applications
Why it matters
Iron-deficiency anemia
One of the richest plant sources of iron. Soak before use to reduce phytic acid and increase bioavailability.
Diabetes management
Very low GI (43–50) and high fiber produce a slow, sustained glucose release — ideal for diabetics and pre-diabetics.
Weight management
12.6g dietary fiber creates strong satiety with relatively few calories. Resistant starch further reduces net caloric absorption.
Gut health
High insoluble fiber and resistant starch feed beneficial gut microbiome bacteria.

Classical Note
Classified as Shyamaka in classical texts. Recommended as a wholesome food for convalescents and during fasting (Vrata) because it is light, energising, and easily digested.
Origin Story
From the field
Uttarakhand · Himalayan foothills
In Uttarakhand's hill districts, 64% of cultivators are women — and Jhangora is their crop. Men have largely migrated to plains cities, leaving women to manage terraced farms that some families have tended for seven generations. The Baranaja system — traditional polyculture planting of twelve or more crops together — is still practiced by some Pahari women, with barnyard millet as one of the central elements. Vijay Jardhari's Beej Bachao Andolan (Seed-Saving Movement) in Tehri Garhwal has preserved over 350 indigenous rice and millet varieties, including rare sub-varieties of Jhangora. The December 2023 GI tag was a direct result of advocacy by hill women's self-help groups (mahila mangal dals).
