About
What is Finger Millet?
Finger millet (Ragi) is arguably India's most nutritionally complete traditional grain. Its calcium content of 344–364mg per 100g surpasses that of milk on a per-gram basis — a remarkable fact for a grain, since calcium is typically associated with dairy. Finger millet also contains methionine, an essential amino acid that is conspicuously absent from most other cereals. Sprouted Ragi sees its calcium bioavailability rise by approximately 30% as phytic acid is reduced by enzymatic action. Fermented Ragi preparations (Koozh in Tamil Nadu, Ambali in Karnataka) further unlock iron and zinc that would otherwise remain bound to phytates.
Key Compound
Calcium (highest of any cereal globally)
Calcium in finger millet is partially non-phytate bound, making it more bioavailable than the calcium in most plant sources. Sprouting reduces phytic acid by ~80% and raises absorption further.

Health Applications
Why it matters
Osteoporosis & bone health
344mg calcium/100g — more than any other cereal globally. Regular consumption supports bone mineral density.
Anemia
Combined iron (3.9mg) and methionine improve red blood cell formation. Fermented Ragi provides 2–5× more bioavailable iron.
Infant nutrition
Karnataka's traditional weaning food — roasted Ragi porridge — is the original baby food. High calcium and protein support rapid bone and muscle growth.
PCOS
Fiber content reduces androgen levels by limiting insulin spikes that trigger androgen production in the ovaries.
Ancient Wisdom
In Ayurveda
Dosha Effect
Kapha-pacifying, Vata-reducing
Guna (Quality)
Guru (heavy), Shita (cool)
Best Season
Hemant and Shishir (winter)
Classical Note
Charaka recommends Ragi for skin health and as a nervine tonic. Tryptophan content (serotonin precursor) links it to mood regulation and sleep.
Origin Story
From the field
Karnataka / Uttarakhand · Peninsular India & Himalayas
Finger millet's story in India runs on two parallel tracks. In Karnataka's Mysuru and Hassan districts, it is the grain of Ragi Mudde — dense, palm-sized balls of cooked finger millet that sustain field workers through 12-hour days. It has been the caloric backbone of South India's farming communities for at least 3,000 years, with archaeological evidence from the Harappan site at Kalibangan. The second track is Uttarakhand, where Mandua (finger millet) was GI-tagged in December 2023, officially recognising the Pahari women who grow it on steep terraced farms at 1,500–2,500m altitude. The Beej Bachao Andolan has preserved over 50 indigenous Mandua sub-varieties.
