About
What is Lakadong Turmeric?
Lakadong turmeric is the most potent turmeric on earth. Commercial turmeric typically carries 2–3% curcumin; Alleppey (Kerala), the global export benchmark, reaches 3–6%. Lakadong consistently tests at 7–9% — up to three times the potency of any other variety. The reason is a convergence of factors unique to the Jaintia Hills: volcanic basalt soil naturally enriched in silica, zinc, and boron; high altitude (1,400–1,600m); cool temperatures with monsoon humidity; and a landrace selected over seven generations for deep yellow rhizomes. The GI tag awarded in 2023 formally recognised what local farmers had known for centuries. Hand-pounding (as opposed to machine grinding) retains 30–40% more volatile oils and produces a coarser, more flavour-active powder.
Key Compound
Curcumin (diferuloylmethane)
The most researched natural compound in medicine — 15,000+ PubMed studies. Anti-inflammatory (inhibits NF-κB), antioxidant, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer properties established in clinical literature. Fat-soluble + piperine increases bioavailability by 2,000%.

Health Applications
Why it matters
Inflammation & joint pain
Curcumin inhibits COX-2 and NF-κB — the same pathways targeted by NSAIDs, without gastric side effects.
Alzheimer's & neurodegeneration
Curcumin crosses the blood-brain barrier, disaggregates amyloid-beta plaques, and reduces neuroinflammation.
Liver health
Hepatoprotective — reduces liver enzyme levels in NAFLD patients in clinical trials.
Immunity
Modulates Th1/Th2 immune balance. Reduces chronic low-grade inflammation linked to metabolic syndrome.

Classical Note
Haridra (turmeric) is one of the most versatile herbs in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Charaka uses it for skin conditions, diabetes, anemia, and as a wound-healing agent. The traditional preparation with warm milk and ghee ('Golden Milk') improves fat-soluble curcumin absorption — a 4,000-year-old bioavailability hack.
Origin Story
From the field
Lakadong village, Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya · Northeast India
The Khasi-Jaintia people of Meghalaya live in one of the world's few remaining matrilineal societies: land, property, and clan membership pass through the mother's line; the youngest daughter (Ka Khadduh) inherits the ancestral home. The 14,000 farmers across 43 villages who grow Lakadong turmeric are primarily women — and it is the women who manage the seasonal cultivation calendar: planting with the April rains, hand-weeding through monsoon, and hand-digging the heavy rhizomes in December. NERAMAC (North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation) coordinates the GI-certified supply chain, connecting these farmers to verified buyers.
