Ojas
Ayurveda's concept of vital immunity essence — the finest product of healthy digestion and the foundation of immunity, vitality, and longevity.
— Definition
Ojas is described in classical Ayurvedic texts as the ultimate refined essence of all seven body tissues (Dhatus), produced when digestion and metabolism are optimal. It governs immunity (Bala), vitality (Tejas), and mental clarity (Prabha).
— In Detail
Ojas is depleted by: poor diet (especially processed food), excessive fasting, overwork, grief, chronic illness, and excess sexual activity. Ojas is built by: Rasayana (rejuvenating) foods — ghee, milk, honey, dates, almonds; adequate sleep; Pranayama (breathing practices); meditation. The classical Rasayana formula Chyawanprash contains 40+ herbs specifically formulated to build Ojas — with Amla (Indian gooseberry) as the primary ingredient for its extraordinary Vitamin C content. Modern parallels: Ojas depletion maps approximately to NK (natural killer) cell depletion, cortisol excess, and mitochondrial dysfunction seen in chronic stress and overwork.
— Why It Matters
The Ojas framework provides a functional model for preventive medicine — the idea that daily food choices either build or deplete a 'reserve' of immunity and vitality. The observation that certain foods (ghee, honey, dates) consistently make people feel more energised and resilient reflects real nutritional effects — healthy fats, antioxidants, and micronutrients — even if the mechanism differs from the classical description.
